Children's Ministry

Children's Sunday School Classes

During the COVID-19 health crisis, we invite children and youth to watch the Sunday morning worship service online.  Pastor Eva continues to share fun messages during the Children's Moments for children, youth, and the young at heart.

On May 24th, Pastor Eva encouraged prayers for Jesus in addition to others who you care about and love.  She asked for a picture of you holding a blessing container which contains blessings of thanks that you might have been writing during these past few weeks.  To celebrate Pentecost Sunday next week, feel free to download and color the Pentecost coloring pages on the  website > News & Events > Latest Announcements.

Pastor Eva asked for fun photos from you to share during the May 31st online worship service: a photo of you and your family, a picture of you holding your blessing box, and your decorative Pentecost coloring page(s).  Please email the photos to her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Thurs., May 28th.

After the COVID-19 crisis passes, we look forward to resuming Sunday School classes!

Infants, Toddlers and Pre-School:

In this classroom, Sunday Schoolers color lesson pages, hear and read stories about Jesus, enjoy a snack, and have fun playing with toys and playground equipment.

Early Elementary:

The early elementary class for Kindergarten through 2nd grade is family-friendly and fun!  The teachers are kind and caring.  Children learn about The Bible in ways that are understandable for younger ages.

Older Elementary:

3rd through 5th graders learn about how to find things in The Bible and read stories from it. They do crafts (like playing with clay), play games, cook food, and act out stories from The Bible.

Middle School:

6th through 8th graders learn about stories from The Bible and relate lessons to everyday life, learn Manners Moments, and play games like Apples to Apples and Scrabble (Bible versions!).

High School:

9th through 12th grades share highs and lows from the week, explore scripture lessons, and reasons for those concepts. They ask questions and discuss scenarios related to The Bible.

Children's Music Programs

After the COVID-19 health crisis passes, we look forward to resuming music programs for children and youth!

The Carol Choir welcomes 2nd through 6th graders to share the gifts of their voices through songs of joy.   Practices are held after Sunday School in the Music Room under the direction of Diane Lucas.  The Carol Choir performs once a month at the beginning of worship service, as well as during the Christmas Eve Family Service.

The Youth Bell Choir for 6th grade and older musicians rings out classical and pop tunes during the worship service.  Practices are held after Sunday School in the Sanctuary under the direction of Carolyn Noonchester.   The Youth Bell Choir performs once a month during worship service with the Youth Choir, and during Christmas Eve services.

The Youth Choir recently performed musical hits through the decades at the "Annual Cabaret" to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Church of the Good Shepherd.  The performances were standing-room only and benefited the United Methodist Youth Fellowship efforts to participate in the Sierra Service Project.

Youth Choir practices are held Sunday afternoons for 6th through 12th graders.  Singers perform monthly during worship service with the Youth Bell Choir and during special services through the year such as Easter Sunrise Service, Thanksgiving Eve and the Christmas Eve Family Service.  In addition, Youth Choir members learn to expand their repertoire with simple but rhythmic moves for their special Cabaret musical fundraiser for the Sierra Service Project in March.  The Youth Choir is under the direction of Janice Clark.

For all of these Children’s Music Programs, previous music experience is helpful but not required.

Volunteer Opportunities

Middle School and High School youth serve as acolytes during Communion Sunday, assist with monthly Children's Church classes, help with summer Sunday School, and get involved with other church and community opportunities such as Family Promise and the Sierra Service Project.

Special Events

Trunk or Treat: What would Halloween be without lots of treats?!  At CGS, lots of treats are handed out from lots of Halloween-decorated car trunks in the west church parking lot. “Trunk or Treat” is held Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and provides a fun and safe trick-or-treating environment for kids of all ages!

Advent: Children receive their very own Nativity scene crèche sets during the Advent season leading up to Christmas. Children in Kindergarten through 6th grades receive part of their crèche sets at a church-wide Adornment program.  Children receive additional figures during subsequent Advent seasons until they complete their crèche sets by 6th grade.

Christmas Eve Family Pageant: Children of all ages tell the story of the birth of baby Jesus through narration, pantomime and music.  The Pageant includes performances by the Carol Choir, Youth Bell Choir and Youth Choir.

Easter:We enjoy celebrating Easter with a beautiful sunrise service led by the United Methodist Youth Fellowship group, special Sunday School classes, and an egg-citing Easter Egg hunt!
